Preparatory Strings

Michelle Hatcher, violist and  string specialist,  received her Bachelors and Masters of Music at Manhattan School of Music.  While freelancing and teaching in NYC, she found her true passion, sharing her love of  music with children.

Throughout her career, Ms Hatcher has been a builder of string programs.  While receiving her Suzuki Certification at the School for Strings in NYC, she started the string program at Rutger’s Preparatory School.   At that time she was also helping to build the newly created Suzuki Program at Montclair State University.

Having established a successful private studio in Montclair,  Ms. Hatcher founded Fiddle Fun, an intensive music camp for Suzuki trained musicians to learn  how to fiddle in many styles.   She was delighted to work with many talented fiddlers.

Ms. Hatcher loves all styles of music.  While working as a coach through the NJSO’s Newark Early Strings Program, she welcomed the opportunity to teach at the Rafael Hernandez School of the Performing Arts in Newark.  While there she explored her love of Latin music, African drumming,  fiddling, and band.  Her 5th grade Mariachi Ensemble was chosen to participate in the Kids in Concert Performance in 2010.   Akua Dixon, jazz cellist and composer,  invited the young musicians to participate in her Hip Hop Blues Project at CUNY.  The students also had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall with The School for Strings Fund raising concert in 2011.

Ms. Hatcher is presently teaching in the South Orange/Maplewood School District starting 5th graders on strings.  Her hope that, for them, it is the beginning of a life filled with music.
