Dave Schumacher, Director of NJYS Jazz Studies

David Schumacher has been a touring musician and educator for more than 30 years. He has played and recorded with world renowned jazz artists such as vibraphonist Lionel Hampton for 5 years, Harry Connick, Jr. as an original member of Connick’s orchestra for 19 years, T. S. Monk On Monk, Tom Harrell Octet and Big Band, Art Blakey Big Band,and Mel Tormé among other jazz greats.

Mr. Schumacher has impressed audiences in over 460 cities in 41 countries on the live stage and on countless major television broadcasts. In the 1990s, he was the co-leader/coarranger of Unit 17, a big band composed of some of New York’s finest jazz musicians. As a composer and leader, Mr.Schumacher has three CD’s to his credit.

Kevin Eliot Brown, double bass, earned his M.M. in double bass performance (classical) and B.M. in Jazz Studies (double bass performance) from the University of North Texas, where he studied with Jeff Bradetich and Fred Hamilton. His performance and recording experience includes the Staten Island Symphony, Metro Lyric Opera, Orchestra of St. Peter-by-the-Sea, New Jersey Pops, New Jersey Ballet, Marvin Hamlisch, Rich Little, Regis Philbin, Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, Daryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels, David Sanborn, the Drifters, Monkeyworks, and Mike Richmond. In addition to the Wharton Institute, he also holds faculty positions in both the String and Music Theory departments at Montclair State University and Fairleigh Dickinson University.


Intro to Jazz Workshop
Grades 6-10 | Beginner to Intermediate
Sundays 2:30-4:00 p.m.

An introduction to this nation’s great art form. Melodic and rhythmic improvisation, the blues, basic jazz theory and harmony, song form, jazz history, and ensemble playing are just a few of the musical expanses explored. Guest artists work with students to reach a new understanding of the language of jazz. Open to all instruments—strings, winds, brass, percussion, piano, and guitar.

Intermediate Jazz Workshop
Grades 6-12 | Intermediate
Sundays 2:30-4:00 p.m.

The next step in the Jazz Studies track at NJYS. Students will build on their fundamental knowledge of the jazz art form established in the Intro to Jazz class. Emphasis will be placed on expanding the student’s skills in improvisation, jazz theory and ensemble playing as well as repertoire building. Students will have the opportunity to work with guest professional jazz musicians for true life playing experiences. Open to all instruments—strings, winds, brass, percussion, piano, and guitar. Pre-requisite: Intro to Jazz Workshop and/or discretion of Instructor.

NJYS Jazz Quorum
Grades 9-12 | Advanced
Sundays 1:00-2:30 p.m.

5 talented performers are eligible for the NJYS Jazz Quorum and will receive FULL SCHOLARSHIPS to participate–a $1,100 value! Performing music drawn from throughout the history of the great jazz masters, the NJYS Jazz Quorum provides the opportunity for advanced players to focus on improvisation, ensemble interplay and live performance. Guest professional jazz artists coach and perform with students in a collaborative environment.
